My Version of Batman’s (and The Penguin’s) Origin pt. 2

A few years ago, I took a comic-focused class that involved writing our own origin stories of a selected superhero. I, a huge fan of the Batman Arkham franchise, chose to rewrite Batman’s origin story, focusing more on The Penguin as a central villain. Here’s part two of that assignment

Wayne Enterprises Under New Ownership + Bruce Wayne Press Conference

On the day of his 18th birthday, young Bruce Wayne was notified that he is now the owner of Wayne Enterprises. This information comes from 10-year interim CEO, Lucius Fox. Bruce was brought into the Wayne Enterprises media room to give a press conference. What follows is the transcript of that conference.

“‘We had always planned on bringing you into the family business and showing you how to run a company, but we didn’t want to push this onto you until you were old enough to be responsible for your actions. Now that you’re 18, we want you to take over the family business in our place. We trust you to do the right thing. – Thomas and Martha’

“After spending 10 years in the Gotham City foster care system, the Cobblepot family was generous enough to pull me out of that system when I was 16 years old. Tucker and Miranda Cobblepot took me in when I was only 2 years from becoming a full adult. They knew that, they knew who I was, and who the Wayne family is. Even knowing all that, Tucker and Miranda, who I’ve had the privilege of calling dad and mom for these last two years, provided me with a loving family, a home, a sense of normalcy, and a second chance at life. My gratitude to them runs endlessly deep, and I will forever be grateful for what they’ve done for me. Now, I understand I have a large pair of shoes to fill after my father, but believe me when I tell you that I will run Wayne Enterprises exactly as my father intended. I will be honorable, trustworthy, and I will personally promise the city of Gotham that Wayne Enterprises will provide you the same comfort and family that the Cobblepots have provided me these last two years. Thank you.”

Gotham’s Newest Crime Boss Allegedly Linked to Bruce Wayne

According to a source who wishes to remain anonymous, Oswald Cobblepot is the newest in a string of crime lords that have risen to power in the last year. Oswald took to a life of crime in 2017, shortly after the death of his parents, Tucker and Miranda Cobblepot. Tucker and Miranda left their family business and wealth to their foster son, Bruce Wayne, the owner and CEO of Wayne Enterprises. Wayne allegedly inherited the “Cobblerpots” family bakery chain along with $500,000, which was promptly donated across multiple 9/11 support funds. Bruce and his brother, Oswald Cobblepot, were heavily involved in the “Cobblerpots” family business up until Bruce’s inheritance of Wayne Enterprises in 2014. Oswald remained a member of “Cobblerpots” until his parents’ passing.

Oswald, the only child of the Cobblepot family by birth, was excluded from the will and was left homeless after his parents’ death. Oswald found a new home along the banks of the Gotham River, where he made his start as a petty electronics thief until he rose through the ranks.

Oswald, who now operates under the alias ‘The Penguin’ has made no attempt to hide his reason for taking to a life of crime. In a recent drug bust performed by the Gotham City Police Department, Officer Doug Petty found scribbled notes referring to Penguin’s revenge against Wayne for “stealing his identity, family, and inheritance.”

Wayne made no comment when asked about Penguin in his last press conference.
